Taiwan is taking bold steps to lead the future of healthcare, inviting global partners to be part of its fast-growing health tech ecosystem. With strong roots in information and communications technology (ICT) and advanced medical expertise, the country is driving innovation across AI diagnostics, telemedicine, remote care, and smart hospital systems. This movement is led by the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), with a clear vision to make healthcare smarter, more connected, and patient-centered.
A recent visit to Taiwan's health tech landscape offered a hands-on look at how these innovations are being applied. From pioneering companies to leading hospitals, the experience highlighted Taiwan’s commitment to turning cutting-edge technology into real-world impact.
The tour began at the Taipei Wellness Clinic and Resort - Hotel Royal Beitou, a unique medical tourism model that blends health checkups and aesthetic treatments with hotel-style relaxation. Reflecting Taiwan’s integrated approach to wellness and preventative care, the program offers visitors a seamless health experience in a stress-free setting. It showcases a forward-thinking model of medical tourism and personalized wellness, emphasizing preventative care and a seamless patient experience within a relaxing environment.

The group also visited several medical technology leaders. One of them was BenQ Medical Technology Corporation, a subsidiary of the formidable Qisda Group. We witnessed firsthand their commitment to innovation in medical device development. BenQ's endeavors in this space highlight the critical role of advanced hardware in underpinning smart healthcare systems. Their work often involves integrating complex medical equipment with digital interfaces, creating devices that are not only highly functional but also capable of seamless data exchange within a smart hospital environment. This integration is crucial for real-time monitoring, efficient diagnostics, and streamlined clinical workflows.

Acer Medical Inc., leveraging Acer Group's vast IT legacy, presented its cutting-edge AI-powered solutions for digital diagnostics and advanced data management in healthcare. Its focus on AI for precise analysis and personalized treatment pathways underscores the critical role of artificial intelligence in modern medicine. The company also showcased its commitment to improving diabetes care through VeriSee DR, an AI-assisted diagnostic software designed to detect diabetic retinopathy (DR). This solution helps identify high-risk patients with speed and accuracy, enabling earlier intervention and more effective clinical decision-making.
Meanwhile, John Chuang, CEO of Onyx Healthcare, shared his vision of delivering reliable, high-quality medical PC solutions driven by client-centered strategies, continuous innovation, and long-term goals. During the visit, Onyx Healthcare also demonstrated its advanced medical computing platforms, which play a critical role in enabling the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) and supporting secure, efficient healthcare operations.
The real-world impact of these technologies was clearly evident during the visit to Taipei Veterans General Hospital (TVGH), where smart hospital systems have been actively implemented. Dr. Wui-Chiang Lee, Vice Superintendent, also emphasized the hospital’s commitment to international collaboration, noting that TVGH has partnered with hospitals in other countries—particularly in areas of medical technology and smart healthcare—to exchange expertise and accelerate innovation.
Across various departments, including the Medical AI Development Center, Neurology, Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Pathology and Laboratory, Rare Disease Units, and Nursing Care—digital solutions are being used to enhance diagnostic accuracy, streamline workflows, and significantly reduce the workload of medical personnel. From AI-assisted diagnostics to integrated data systems and remote consultation platforms, the hospital exemplifies how digital transformation is reshaping patient care and operational efficiency.
And of course, the hospital’s presentation wouldn’t be complete without an introduction to Oba, the beloved therapy dog who has become a symbol of comfort and joy for patients across Taiwan.
