As always, every year Techsauce has summarized the movements of the tech startup sector in Thailand with its Thailand Tech Startup Report 2019. There have been many interesting trends in 2019 and we hope this insight will help you prepare for challenges in the future.
Here are some of the highlights:
- Like other parts of the economy, Thai startups found 2019 to be quite challenging. Although there was growth, it was at a slow rate. However looking at the brighter side, the growth was significant compared to 2018 with a total of 35 deals made, valued at US$97.55 altogether.
- There have been several major startup funding rounds (Pomelo raised US$52 million during its Series C funding round), signalling that Thailand is ready to support the growth of startups.
- Thailand is a main market of unicorns within the Asian region, especially in the fields of service and e-commerce.
- Funding rounds continued to develop, especially for seed funding to Series A and Series A to Series B. The average amount of funds raised was higher compared to the previous year.
- Startups in the growth stage paid less attention to fundraising and shifted their focus on creating a profit for their businesses in order to decrease the risks from the global economic slowdown to ensure stable growth.
- Advantages found in Thailand are supportive regulations and measures to drive the digital economy, as well as laws relating to digital assets and awareness of the privacy act. However, existing laws relating to business operations continue to be obstacles to the development of startups in Thailand. Examples of laws deterring foreign investors from coming into Thailand are those pertaining to equity shares or capital gain taxes.
