Instagram brings back chronological timeline due to popular demand

Instagram has announced that it will be updating the timeline settings for all users, shifting the autonomy of the app back to the users

Back in 2016, Instagram angered a vast amount of Instagram users by switching their feed from one that was in chronological order, to one that was determined by algorithms. Not only did this mean that users were being fed a timeline that was entirely decided by Instagram, it also implied that users could miss key updates from their social circle such as a friend’s graduation or a family member’s birthday.

There has been a public outcry for Instagram to bring back their chronological feed, or at least let users switch between the different timeline settings as Facebook does — there was even a petition by Change.org with 26,000 signatures at the time of this writing.

After listening to their user’s comments, Instagram finally responded:

Based on your feedback, we’re also making changes to ensure that newer posts are more likely to appear first in your feed. With these changes, you will never miss a moment you care about anymore.

What’s great about this change is that Instagram users will be able to view the latest posts on their feed even if they are infrequent users of the app. Another major feature added by Instagram is the “New Posts” button. Previously, users had no control over their timeline as it would be refreshed automatically by the app. Now with the “New Posts” button, users can choose when they would like their timeline to be refreshed with new pictures and posts.
