Shopee reveals latest seller insights and reaffirms its commitment to empower more Thai sellers

Shopee, the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, recently unveiled its latest seller insights and reaffirmed its commitment to grow and empower more Thai sellers in the year ahead. In 2018, Shopee Thailand saw a 150% increase in sellers compared to the previous year, cementing Shopee’s position as the leading e-commerce platform in Thailand and across the region.

As the Thai e-commerce market grows, Shopee Thailand continues to expand steadily. In addition to a strong seller growth for top categories including Electronics, Fashion, and Health and Beauty; seller growth is also observed to spike in selected growing interest categories such as Motors, Home Appliances, Computers & Laptops, Food & Beverages and Pets in the past year. Motors saw the highest increase in seller growth, with over 250% more sellers selling motor products compared to the previous year; in line with Shopee’s efforts to cater to the growing number of male shoppers on the platform.

Agatha Soh, Head of Regional Marketing at Shopee, said, “Shopee Thailand has witnessed tremendous success in the past year, which we could not have done without the strong support of our sellers. Along with that, we are also constantly finding ways to introduce new features and initiatives to provide them with the necessary support to grow their businesses with us; and at the same time, work with them to offer our users more cost-savings and an optimised product assortment.”

Key facts about Shopee Thailand sellers:

  • Sellers are most active at night: 10pm to 11pm was recorded as the time period with the highest number of sellers logging on to Shopee.
  • Small products make great sales: During the last Shopee 12.12 Birthday Sale in Thailand, the top selling item by a single seller was low-cut socks at 47,879 pairs sold. In 2018, a total of 17,691 car mobile phone holders were sold.
  • Thais love to chat before purchasing: Over 400 million Live Chat messages were exchanged between sellers and buyers in 2018.
  • Most entrepreneurial province: Samut Prakarn province saw the most number of sellers on Shopee Thailand.
  • More Thais are purchasing big ticket items online: More expensive item sold in 2018 is a set of LaCie Hard Drive Arrays at 99,000 THB from the Seagate Thailand Official Shop on Shopee Mall.

As part of its commitment to educate sellers and help them grow their businesses, Shopee Thailand held a total of 27 Shopee University workshops in 2018; with the largest class hosting over 800 sellers. Shopee also partnered the Office of SMEs Promotion (OSMEP) to onboard over 5,500 local SMEs on Shopee, as part of the SME Online program that was launched in June 2018 to empower local entrepreneurs and SMEs via a series of workshops, campaigns and training.

“As sellers are a crucial part of Shopee’s ecosystem, we aim to continue expanding and educating our seller base, and work hand in hand with them to deliver the best shopping experience for all Thais,” closed Soh.
