Amazon Web Services Summit 2018: An Interview with 'Axel Winter' of Central Group

Techsauce received an exclusive interview with Axel Winter - The Chief Technology Officer for the central group at this years AWS global summit, a cloud computing community that attracts technologists from all industries.

Axel Winter is an advocate for driving Technology Transformation, Building new technology organization supporting agile technology development worldwide, focusing on Omni Channel, e-Commerce, Data & Analytics, Machine Learning & AI, Customer Care, Digital Marketing, and Retail Innovation.

He gives Techsauce his expertise and viewpoint on this particular field below.

What are the key factors for enterprise transformation and what is the biggest challenges you face?

Out of technology  - of course, the business wants to do all the latest, coolest inventions out there but then the technology doesn't know how to do it yet, therefore, they are not fundamentally changing. Even when there are people out there with a good strategy, they still don't know how to execute.

How many of the players in the industry have tried to change? almost none. They have a great strategy but they don't know how to execute. In my opinion, it takes advanced technology, extremely smart people in a tech team, that can pull the organisation forward and in all the other areas of the business. outsourcing can ruin it. Its all about your internal employees.

build strong teams, strategies, making technology an equal part of the business and then execute. you have to keep moving forward. It's very difficult for companies at times. Transformation comes from change. If you don't change then nothing will happen.

Why did you choose AWS instead of the other competitors?

At the time when I started with Central Group, we didn't want to worry about accounts services or other sections... AWS has the best breadth and depth in the core offerings and is a unique cloud provider. The support in this organisation transferred to our team to help accelerate fast.

How do you differentiate between online and offline?

Technically it's quite easy... you start ingesting data like a loyalty platform and point of sales transactions or google analytics data. We can collect the data quickly. If I order something online, its really an API. it's a trial and error effort. You have to allow people to get the experience online, learn, adjust and improve.

Do you use only analytics, model?

This is about business intelligence becoming more useful. A lot of things are happening below that as a user you wouldn't know. Business intelligence becomes a self-service tool for business users. It allows us to put data together which is meaningful for them. The technology is more advanced and creates a power point that is more advanced.

AWS is built using EMR which helps to collect the data. It's a core analytics platform. We have used these platforms for banks in the data sector for example. In terms of countries, we have located in Singapore and have a big in-house data team that help us with this. We may move to Chaing Mai, location depends on skills.

In the past big corporates hire teams, for example, 1000 people in India, this is extreme outsourcing for cheap labour. The Offshoring model is all about price, not quality. When we look for employees we look for skills and expertise in-house and outsourcing. That's what we strive for. If I have anyone coming to me I interview them personally to see if they have the correct skills.

How do you manage the multi-cloud?

Each cloud provider has different strengths, google analytics is a good example of this, with a strong ecosystem and specific business model that seems to work and is really strong. You continue the codifier that they use and adapt it to your business.
