There is little to no doubt that the introduction of 5G technology will fundamentally change how we do things and everything internet. This sweeping change will hit most companies and the economy.
Techsauce got together a panel of industry leaders and 5G specialist. Their inputs and thoughts were both interesting and informative.
According to 5G specialist Marios Nicolaou, South East Asia is set to be transformed by 5G technology. Admittedly, the region is known to be a new technology, the demand for 5G will be huge. The media demand alone will ensure that 5G technology will be in great demand.
5G is all about cost reduction, speed, efficiency, and generating new revenue opportunities. Vertically it will be updated by the transformation of their business model. A lot of transformation, but good transformation.
Korea is one country where 5G technology is being used and the impact has been huge. However, there is no business to business (B2B) use cases. The successes and impact of 5G have only been felt and realized in the consumer market. It is estimated that 5G subscribers are over 1 million. B2B use cases are what the industry needs but it will take time to get there.
The technology is set to completely change the customer experience. Thailand is ready to launch and enjoy the benefits of 5G. According to Wasit of AIS, 5G technology is expected to be launched in the next two years. 5G offers incredible speeds and disrupt consumer behavior with handsets or units.
There is a huge role for the government in the rollout of 5G technology. The reason for the complexity of the system. Namely the regulator, IT and creator - the government can help all communicating with each other. Regulators must ensure that they do not have a huge cost on their frequencies.
A general consensus among the panellist is that a new ecology. The Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and 5G will be the components of the next revolution. The IoT will be the compliment on the 5G and AI will control the capabilities.
With any new technology, there are challenges to its rollout and adoption. 5G offers some challenges to commercialization. Firstly, there is a huge investment by TelCos in infrastructure. The investment in the infrastructure is estimated to be double than normal. Also, 5G is more than just handsets.
Again, all panellists agree that the biggest challenge to 5G technology right now is finding the proper business use case. The problem is that it is not possible to follow the path of 5G. However, 5G will require huge investments in infrastructure. For example, a plant that needs to invest in sensors and all the other hardware that is
Ultimately, further research and testing are required to properly estimate the impact 5G will have on the industry and business. Right now, there is not enough. We need all the industry to be involved and not only the responsibility of TelCos.
